We have just spent a weekend having a “Celebration of Life” centered around our fiftieth anniversary and giving thanks for the miracle of my own life continuing in spite of the many implied endings. The wonderful weekend left me totally spent – it takes lots of energy to have such a grand time. I wrote a piece entitled “Should you Ask” to read at the event, and it is printed below.

SHOULD YOU ASK. . .
As years have flown, I have sinned many times
There is much I need not mention
The guard that stood before my lips
was occasionally resting—not paying attention.

I spoke what I thought, no editor present
And what I thought was not always pleasant
But fine forgiveness wipes all away,
And now, no one cares about what I say
However. . .
Should you ask, I would advise:
Choose life with a musician.
True, there are many fine positions.
Electricians… physicians, beauticians,
dieticians, statiscians. . .
Yet. . .
The best is a musician.
You are always near a love song,
you will never give a thought
to life without music or iTunes not bought.
And then, should your musician
have a way with flowers
You’re well equipped to party
at any and all hours.

Should you ask, I would advise:
Cherish and admire your daughters and your sons,
if you are blessed with any or some
They astonish and delight
They frighten and amaze,
They beam bright light
Into otherwise dull days.
It’s the same with the grandchildren
when they arrive on earth,
You’re in the presence of perfection,
Genetic correction!
Words cannot express their inexpressible worth.

Should you ask, I would advise:
That friendships be made and honored thereafter.
These are the people
for prime time and laughter.
Who by their prayers and in their caring
lighten your load by their sharing.
They gladly stand guard
at the corners of your lives
when the way becomes difficult
and the lesser times arrive.

Life brings inevitable encounters with grief
and when they come, this is my belief.
One must look hard for any good thing –
a sunrise or bird’s nest, or a new song to sing.

Should you ask, I would advise:
An on-going conversation
with our God Father/Mother who keep us in hand.
Whose power and grace and ongoing creation
gives us our purpose and a firm place to stand.

It is with God’s presence we are begun
And in this Spirit we all are one.
It is in God’s presence we walk and we run.
We move through our days in the light of the Son.

When our lives end, and end they must,
(Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.)
Our God Father/Mother will fling wide the door
To eternity’s chambers, And then will say
“Welcome home my children, welcome home to stay.
Welcome home my children, welcome home.”

Happy 50th! What a cherished time that must have been. Thanks, too for “Should You Ask.” You are a talented and inspiring lady…it’s my good fortune to call you “friend.” Should you ask…Jesus loves you…and so do I!…Tom

I’ve been following you for so long, hesitating to comment, not knowing if you would know me, but I’m sure, at least, you recognize my family name!

First, that picture of the two of you – it brought tears to my eyes. You’re beautiful and handsome and so obviously in love.

Then I read your writing, and again as I have many times in reading you, I cried.

You, Mrs. Ore, are an amazing testament to the Grace and Strength of God.

Thank you for your witness, thank you for the inspiration you provide. Thank you for the love you hold for you family. All beautiful!

Happy Anniversary!

Congratulations on your celebration of 50 years together and of life in general.

I found your page through John Paul on Facebook. Amazing how the world can be connected.

Truly enjoy your poetry. I look forward to reading more.

Dear Connie and Charles,

What a beautiful picture – filled with joy, love, and peace! The poem is equally as wonderful, written by an eloquent writer who composes from the heart!

May this week continue the celebration as you remember the events of the weekend.

Mr and Mrs Ore
I have many, many fond memories of growing up in your household. It was very different from my own home-not better or worse, but a different lovely example to learn from and take into my own life. You especially taught me to love The Beatles! Congratualations on you 50th! Your poem was beautiful and to are you!
Thank you!

Dear Mrs. Ore,

First of all, congratulations on your anniversary! I will be sure to offer my congratulations to Dr. Ore next time I see him here at Concordia.

Secondly, what a lovely picture of the two of you. As a very young engaged woman, you and your husband are such a wonderful example to me of what marriage should be!

Thirdly, I had a delightful experience this morning which I think you will appreciate. I was walking through campus, between Jesse and Founder’s Hall, when I noticed two rabbits playing in the grass. As I had a few free minutes, I sat down between them, hoping they’d approach me. After a while one of them scratched in the dirt at the base of a nearby tree, then laid down rather like dogs do. It stretched out its back legs behind, and folded its front legs under its chin. It rather looked like it might nod off, as its eyes kept drooping partway shut. I mimicked its position (although without nodding off), and when after a few minutes I sat up to leave, so did the rabbit. When it hopped behind the tree I got up myself. It was rather neat.

God’s blessings to you!

Dear Connie and Dr. Ore, I have followed your blog for a couple of years now and have even printed out copies for friends who do not “do” the internet. I enjoy the poetry and prose alike, both the sighs and the highs. Many times your thoughts have been my companion throughout the day. I was an organ student of Prof. Ore during the mid 70s (in the days of Paul Tepker and David Polley) and have relished his concerts from NE to TX. I am a fan of both of you, and wish you a very blessed 50th Anniversary. May God continue to give you a bounteous time of loving. Nancy Lamborn Thyparambil

Congratulations on your special celebration! God has been (and will continue to be) so good to you during these 50 years. We have great memories of our days at Concordia (class of ’76) and continued those memories with Dr. Ore serving as consultant for us on an organ project in Aurora, CO.

Mrs. Ore, our prayers continue to be lifted to the Lord for health and strength on your behalf. You are an inspiring writer.

God be with you both!
