birdSeedBird.jpgWith temperatures in the teens, snow on the ground and on every evergreen tree branch, winter speaks loudly at Sanctuary. The yard is very animated with many birds active around each of the feeding stations because in this cold weather, they must eat nearly their weight in seeds to keep warm. In the mornings, the snowbirds, sparrows, nuthatches, and cardinals are very cautious because the hawk will be coming through right above the ground looking for its breakfast. By noon, the birds are everywhere, cheerfully chattering and moving between the feeders and across the ground, not unlike a busy marketplace, and I know it is because the hawk has selected its meal from among the company, caught it, ate it, and is resting replete on some favorite branch.

santaBellPlayers.jpgCharles purchased a set of bell playing figures at an antique store, and they all strike one of two bells with little wands. . .the whole thing plays thirty five Christmas carols, and the set is charming and delightful – the only difficulty is that we have yet to be able to listen to all thirty five songs; the bells sound amazingly good for their size and shape, but I personally have lasted through just sixteen, and I believe that is about ten more than Charles has been able to tolerate. He usually comes past and shuts the mechanism off saying, “There. Now we’ve got the idea, and I’m sure the grandchildren will love it.” Since there is not a complete listing of the pieces, it may well be that the last ten or so are so beautiful it will bring tears to the eyes, but to date, we may have to let them be discovered by others.

rearView.jpgThe past days have been a new thing in my life; doing nothing to fight, or even argue, with the cancer in the blood. It would be very nice to pretend that it isn’t there, however, this is not possible because of how I feel. If I have an activity, I will spend the next day in exhaustion and pain. Generally, I find that I am doing less as the days go by, and I do not expect a morning when I will awaken and rise up feeling full of energy and wellness. This is not an easy thing and I have to beat back the darkness. Ultimately, hope is always there and Charles is always strong and positive – so we go forward with the prayer, “Lord God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Hi You Three:

A very quick musical note. We went to a snowy Montreal last week for my 70th B-day. Very pleasant times with some excellent music.

The classical radio station there is excellent, and, amazingly, they broadcast directly on the web, something we learned when we returned to Southern CA.. (It goes directly without any other player.) The following will get you there (and give you a chance to get your “French ears” operative).

Please know that you are much in our thoughts and prayers — in Montreal (at a McGill organ concert, at their Notre Dame copy Cathedral, at a downtown Montreal United Church of Canada service we attended, and during late evening and early morning times at our Sherbrooke Street lodging), and, as always, in those quiet very focussed moments at home.

It occured to me today that God’s love leads us to life. It leads us through senseless violence, suffering, the death of seasons, birds, and our own mortality to what Shakespeare called that “undiscovered country.” Yet this journey for Christians is led by a loving God, and it returns us whole again to our Creator in what I believe will be a state of bliss that excels the brightest mornings.
You are ever in my prayers,
Mira

The prayer you have used is one of our favorites. As you move along this untrodden path, you are an unflinching example of faith, trust, and hope, all delivered with a grace of words that few can match. I think that all who know you and/or read your words can only pray that a miracle is awaiting on your path. And I suppose one can say that whatever the eventual outcome, God offers a miracle of one sort or another.

Mom

The blackness is a powerful conundrum to balance. On one hand all things must pass – even within us renewal occurs on vast scales every minute. Again, I am shocked that I was honestly caught unaware that this rule would also apply to you.

You are so loved on so many many levels and have touched the lives of so many – Your banner will be carried on long after you have left us and we will be better as a result.

I found this quote and I thought of you and the hymns you sing in your head:

When I hear music, I fear no danger. I am invulnerable. I see no foe. I am related to the earliest times, and to the latest. Henry David Thoreau

Take courage, peace and love to your heart today – God holds you in his hand

I have continued to read your blogs since the passing of my Michael, and I am so very sorry that the vidaza is no longer working for you. You were blessed with the extra time it brought you to be with your loved ones. I wish that it had been the same for my husband and I, I miss him constantly. I have added your web address to my address book in case you might need to talk.

Connie, The closing prayer you quote also has a marvelous choral setting which your dear Charles composed. We sang it often at Pacific Hills and I sang it in my mind and heart as I read it once again. Such a heart warming prayer with such comforting words. May these sustain you as you wend your way down this earthly path in your journey to the other side and perfect healing.

Christmas Blessings,

Hi Connie and All:

I have thought a lot about your comment that your image of Heaven was a California Pacific Ocean tree-framed place. Such comforting landscapes have long been important to us, and the availability of webcams helps us keep up with some of our favorite places.

I can’t recall your exact route down the Oregon and California coast, but I have found a few webcams that might capture some of the magical sense of that coast.

1. (My favorite, on a daily basis!) This will get you to a map of the Oregon Deprartment of Transportation webcams. There are two which are very ocean oriented, both at Newport, Oregon. The webcam on the left gives you a look at the ocean from the harbor, taken from a high bridge. The other gives you a look south from the highway on that bridge. The view west is often very quiet and muted, and the highway view south often has very nice light. (The other two ocean cams on this site don’t give you much – the one near Florence shows a Highway 101 slide area, and the south coast one, at Port Orford, doesn’t show the ocean.)

2. This webcam is at Sea Lion Caves, a tourist spot between Newport and Florence. The view is to the north, and includes the historic Heceta Head Lighthouse. The highway (to the right) is perched midway up a very steep slope (where Tripcheck slide webcam is). You will thus get very dim early morning pictures, but some nice afternoon images.

3. (Another favorite) This webcam is a view from a Florence, Oregon, County Park toward the ocean. It shows the Siuslaw River flowing into the ocean between rock jetties. This park is very near where we used to live, and our (late) dog and I spent many hours on walks through this beautiful park..

(the above would be entered as one long address)

The following are from a google webcam snoop.

1. I was looking for a Mendocino area webcam (an area we have driven through only once). This seems nice and peaceful. There are some other nice fixed (good weather!!) ocean photos on this site.

2. I don’t recall your exact route south of SF. This is a webcam in Pismo Beach, looking north. If you came down 101 in CA south of SF you may have driven through Pismo Beach. This camera looks north toward the Pismo Beach Pier. The ground cover is more brush than trees, but the gentle slope of the hills away from the ocean is nice.

3. This is a nice active webcam based in San Clemente (southern Orange County). The pier area is away from I-5, and is very pleasant. There is an older motel on a cliff nearby where Susan and I have stayed recently. The views are very peaceful (even when the Amtrak and the commuter train psses on the sea level track below the motel!!). Note that the picture size can be expanded. The webcam is to the north of the pier, and thus view looking at the shore w/out the pier are in the direction of Dana Point. The “pace” of the webcam is great, as it shows the motion of the surf (and even some [blurred] birds in flight).

So, checking out possible Heavens via webcam? That is clearly a strange thought, but, in fact, these are very peaceful and comforting places that indeed show some of the wondrous aspects of the Earth that God has entrusted to us.

You remain much in our thoughts and prayers. And, as my (late) Christian Science paternal grandmother would urge: Be Sure To Keep Your Right Ideas Active!!! For you, right now, this is truly a challenge. Please know, however, that we are very much with you.

Dear Connie,

In preparation for a family progressive dinner, which we had tonight at three homes here in KC, I busily decorated my house yesterday. My inclination was to only put out enough decorations to make the place look somewhat festive. But then as I opened box after box, it was easier just to go ahead and put out everything, since I was looking through it all anyway! And boy, am I glad I did. I felt so connected to past Christmases with the family — to all of the joyous occasions we had together. Even the two “First Christmas Together” ornaments from my failed marriage found places on my Christmas tree. It was as if I could see all of the events of my life, both good and not so good, as pearls on a strand (or beads on a garland?) — all separate but connected and together making a beautiful thing. Maybe I experienced some of the “peace” of Christmas in my heart — I am sure that the Lord was speaking to me and telling me, “Mindy, I have been with you all along, and I will continue to be with you. Everything will be all right.” I’m sure you are having a lot of those sentimental thoughts as well during this season. I hope that you feel that deep sense of peace, knowing that our Lord is so faithful and good. He IS our Strength through everything, and I pray that you will feel this to the very core of you!

The birds were crazy with hunger yesterday, so I gave them extra cracked corn and high-energy blend. It felt good to help them through the cold spell. DON’T TELL — I bought my mom a window bird feeder for Christmas so that she can and her indoor kitty can watch the birds from the coziness of their apartment! This will help them pass these cold winter days. . . .

Wishing you that peace,
Mindy
